Thinking About Remodeling Your Home

As a family grows, often the needs of the family change, which is why many homeowners consider remodeling. By remodeling, homeowners have the benefit of staying in the home they love. But before you decide to take on a remodeling project, here are a few questions you’ll want to consider.

How much will the project cost? How long will it take? Who will you hire to do it? Will the project enhance the value of your home?

Many publications and online resources can give you design ideas and help you research reputable contractors. Get estimates from at least three and always be sure to check their references. Choose a contractor who has experience with the type of project you are considering.

Some neighborhood associations require approval for remodeling and most municipalities require a building permit.

Based on the extent of the project, construction can last from weeks to months – so be prepared to deal with some inconvenience along the way.

But most importantly, consult your REALTOR® before making any remodeling decisions. They are familiar with home values in your area and can help you understand what impact your proposed project may have on your home’s resale value.
