The Multiple Listing Service – or “MLS” – is a database system most real estate companies use when they market and sell properties. REALTORS® developed the MLS, and other real estate technologies, to make real estate transactions more efficient.
REALTORS® share information with each other on the MLS related to properties they’ve listed. The MLS facilitates cooperation between REALTORS®. REALTORS® working with buyers are invited to cooperate in the sale in exchange for compensation if they produce the buyer.
Sellers benefit from REALTORS® working together to sell their property. Buyers benefit because they can access information about all MLS-listed properties while working with only one REALTOR®.
MLS information is now readily available on the Internet on local and national real estate websites. Buyers and sellers can work with the REALTOR® of their choice and be confident knowing that they have access to information on all properties for sale in their area.
Access to property information is provided free of charge to the public by REALTORS® who participate in the MLS.
