Making Your Home More Secure

There’s no absolute way to protect your home from break-ins, but securing your home doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are some tips and suggestions on simple steps you can take to make your home more secure.

Lock doors and windows. Sounds obvious, but using the locks you already have remains one of the best ways to prevent or slow down unwanted entry into your home.

Vary your routine when possible by periodically leaving at different times or be leaving a light on when you aren’t home.

Install motion detecting lights in outdoor fixtures.

If you plan to be away for an extended period, alert your local police and stop delivery of newspapers and mail so they don’t pile up.

Inform your neighbors. If they know you aren’t home they are more likely to notice any suspicious activity.

Arrange to have someone mow your lawn or remove snow to make it look like someone is home.

And lastly, before you consider installing an expensive home security system, know that many experts suggest the most effective part of these systems is simply the warning sticker on your window or the sign in your yard.
