Preventing Dryer Fires

Accumulated lint in a clothes dryer or its exhaust duct can block the flow of air. This can cause excessive heat to build up and

Clean the link filter before or after drying each load. Signs that you may have a blockage are damp clothing at the end of a typical drying cycle or drying times that take longer than normal.

Check the outside dryer vent while the dryer is operating to make sure exhaust air is escaping. If it is not, the vent or exhaust duct may be blocked.

Have a qualified service technician clean the interior of the dryer chassis periodically to minimize the amount of lint accumulation.

Replace plastic or foil “accordion-type” ducting material with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal ducts. Most manufacturers specify the use of rigid or semi-rigid metal ducts to provide maximum air flow.

Flexible plastic or foil type ducting materials trap lint more easily. They are also more susceptible to kinks and crushing.
