Ways to Conserve Water in Your Home

In addition to saving money on utility bills, conserving water helps prevent pollution in lakes and rivers in your area and helps to keep your municipal sewer system from overflowing. Here are some ways to conserve water in your home:

  • Check your faucets and water pipes for leaks.
  • Don’t leave tap water running longer than needed – and don’t keep water running when you brush your teeth or when you shave.
  • Consider converting your toilets to a dual flush system since each time you flush the toilet you use 2 to 5 gallons of water.
  • Take shorter showers and install water saving shower heads.
  • Only run full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher – and don’t pre-rinse dishes since that really isn’t necessary.
  • Select ENERGY STAR appliances when purchasing new units.
  • Insulate your water pipes.
  • Water your lawn early in the morning so less water evaporates.

While these are just a few ways you can cut down on water usage in your home, these small changes can add up and save hundreds of gallons of water each year.
